Commercial areas

Well thought out – land use plans for the offshore wind industry

Bremerhaven is specifically targeting the needs of the wind energy industry with the further development of commercial areas alongside water deep enough for seagoing vessels and with forward-looking investment in infrastructure.

In the slipstream of the Labradorhafen heavy-load terminal and the planned Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB), an industrial estate for producers and suppliers engaged in offshore wind energy has already been developed in the Luneort commercial area.

A further 270 hectares of production and assembly space for companies seeking to expand or set up a base are available in the Luneplate industrial estate right next to manufacturers Adwen, Senvion and PowerBlades.

The best conditions. Right on the doorstep

An area located directly adjacent to water deep enough for seagoing vessels offers everything the wind energy industry needs:

  • Production and assembly space for foundation, tower, nacelle and blade manufacturing as well as for storage and final assembly
  • Transport areas with load-bearing capacity and dimensions large enough to handle offshore components with heavy-duty forklift trucks
  • A heavy-load handling facility
  • Excellent transport infrastructure

Current construction projects

Work began in 2012 on constructing the transport link between the Luneort/Luneplate industrial areas and the planned Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB) as well as on optimising the transport link to the newly developed industrial sites.

Late in 2014, BIS completed a southern ring road around the existing Luneort/Reithufer industrial area, facilitating a fast transport connection to the A27 autobahn via the B71. The maximum distance from the Luneort industrial estate to the A27 is four kilometres.

This southern ring road has been extended even further. It crosses the river Lune over two bridges and leads to the Am Lunedeich road close to the airport.

This links a 13-hectare industrial estate ready for development to the road network.

At the end of 2013, Senvion finished the heavy-load Am Lunedeich road to the airport. The road forms the central axis in the Luneort/Luneplate commercial area to the OTB.

BIS will expand the airport runway to accommodate heavy-load transports three months after the plan for the OTB receives approval.

The last road section needed to connect the OTB to inland areas will be realised through the construction of a ramp on the Weserdeich embankment from the end of the airport runway. This efficient and heavy-load-bearing link to inland areas will make the Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven fully accessible to the local offshore industry. An additional 100-metre long, heavy-duty quay is also planned for location on the airport grounds in the Fischereihafen harbour.

The 270-hectare Luneplate industrial estate and the former airport site will gradually be developed for industrial use.
