Comprehensive Concept
The BIS Bremerhaven Economic Development Company pursues since 2001 the goal to develop Bremerhaven into a leading European center of excellence for offshore wind energy. The offshore wind industry has become a powerful engine of structural change in the traditionally strong maritime oriented economy of Bremerhaven. To this date more than 2,000 new jobs have been created in this new industry ? tendency rising. At the same time the industry, the City of Bremerhaven and the State of Bremen render an important contribution to energy transition and climate protection.
Networks
The networking of the State of Bremen and the region-based players in the wind energy sector (companies, scientific institutions, training facilities and institutions to further education, government institutions) was achieved with the establishment of the Wind Energy Agency Bremerhaven Bremen e. V. (WAB). The WAB with over 350 members is now the strongest wind industry network in Germany.
Test locations
Multibrid GmbH (now AREVA Wind) has with the help of the environmental and technology promotion program developed since 2002 a 5-megawatt offshore plant in Bremerhaven which was installed in 2004 as a prototype onshore and has delivered important test results. The designation of a total of five test sites for multi-megawatt wind turbines from REpower and AREVA Wind were important elements in the promotion of research and development of the offshore wind energy.
Research and Development
With the foundation of the wind fk - Institute for Wind Energy, the establishment of a bachelor and master?s degree program for wind energy at the University of Applied Sciences, the wind channel center of the German WindGuard GmbH and particularly with the settlement of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems Technology the range of scientific services in support of research and development for the wind energy industry has been expanded significantly.
Numerous manufacturers and suppliers based in Bremerhaven
In parallel, the BIS has advanced the development of suitable industrial areas at the sea deepwater for production, logistics and service of offshore wind turbines and the necessary port infrastructure. Important manufacturers of offshore installations like Repower Systems SE, AREVA Wind GmbH, Power Blades GMBH and WeserWind Offshore Construction Georgsmarienhütte reside in the industrial area Luneort
New Offshore Terminal and Industrial Park-Concept
With the new offshore terminal in the Weser River, an additional port infrastructure will be available especially for the offshore industry from 2014/2015. The directly adjacent industrial areas, with around 280 ha, are not only providing expansion possibilities for the local companies but also provide room for new companies, suppliers and other service providers.
